Caroline’s Speech: we are ready to fight these cuts
Lucas slams cuts and privitisation Caroline Lucas has addressed Green Party spring conference today by slamming the government over spending cuts and privatisation. Calling the Green Party “the true opposition to the Conservatives”, she highlighted the complicity of the Liberal Democrats with the government’s cuts, and the previous Labour government’s support for the same policies. [...]
Leader of the Welsh Green Party, Jake Griffiths – full speech
Croeso cynnes i Gaerdydd ac i Gymru – a warm welcome to Cardiff and Wales. And it’s an exciting time in Wales, next week we will be voting in a referendum to finally give the Assembly the tools it needs to serve the people of Wales without having unnecessary and lengthy discussions with Westminster. I’ve [...]
Griffiths: Long term jobs, not ‘here today, gone tomorrow’
Welsh Green Party leader Jake Griffiths opened up the Green Party Spring Conference in Cardiff today by outlining his manifesto for the Welsh Assembly. He promised to fight the ‘here today, gone tomorrow’ jobs that the Labour/Plaid Welsh Assembly government are tying to attract to Wales through flirtation with big corporations and pledged instead to [...]
Conference Preview and Highlights
This will be the third Green Party of England and Wales conference I’ve covered for Bright Green, and (I think) the sixth I’ll have attended. It already looks like it might be one of the best (and not just because it showcases both our re-launch and our first live event). So here are a few [...]
Bright Green (not just Scotland)
Exciting times here at Bright Green. First, as you may have noticed, we’ve got a sexy new re-design courtesy of our very own Gary Dunion. The categories along the top should help you navigate around a bit better, and we’ve got a new logo and everything. I’ve seen companies spend months and pay hundreds of [...]
The vulnerability of power – on Gaddafi, Mubarak, and the USA
The vulnerability of power always amazes us. When the icons of strength crumble, we are forever astonished. From the fall of the Berlin Wall and Soviet Union to the fall of Ben Ali and Hozni Mubarak, radical change always seems impossible. Until it happens. But happen it always does, and so we shouldn’t be surprised. [...]
It’s better to break the law than to break the poor
Brenner’s unemployment mortality rate formula suggests that the cuts will result in the deaths of approximately 20,000 people due unemployment alone. What we are witnessing then is the nothing less than a genocide of the vulnerable. In the face of such brutality the only moral position open to councillors is to refuse to act as the executioner for this government of millionaires. We must create a campaign similar to those in the 1920′s and 1980′s based upon the setting of illegal no cuts budgets.
False Economy reveals 50,000 NHS job losses and a diverse movement
Anti-cuts campaign website False Economy has launched officially today with woth research revealing 50,000+ job losses in the National Health Service. The words “I’ll cut the deficit, not the NHS” ring in my ears. But I thought I’d have a look at the website itself*- which is run by a bunch of online activists and [...]

Countering Council Cuts: Local Alternatives to Austerity
This post was first published 3 weeks ago, but we’ve decided to re-post as a response to this controversial piece on Liberal Conspiracy. Photo courtesy of Guardian Edinburgh via flickr While we’ve rightly been focussed so far national campaigns, defending welfare and education, we mustn’t overlook the fact that many of the cuts we are [...]
